Why is my tank water a white/cloudy color?
This is usually caused by high ammonia levels in your tank. Ammonia can be caused by many things. The most common are new tank syndrome, over feeding, or dead fish. See: How do I treat high ammonia? Why is my tank water green? Green water, it is called, is caused by a free floating algae. See: How do I treat green water? Why is my tank covered in brown stuff? The “brown stuff” is a algae. Commonly following a new tank, 3-4 weeks old or when new bulbs are added. This bloom will die down. See: How do I treat brown algae? Why are my fish dying!? Well this can be a hard one. There are many reasons fish can die. One being new tank syndrome. But in most cases I would recommend bringing in a water sample. How do I treat high ammonia? It depends on the tank. If it is a new tank, 2-3 weeks old, then just let it sit and the tank will work itself out in about 5-6 days. Otherwise, ammonia can be lowered by doing a 25-30% water change, cutting your feeding in half, or chemical ammonia removers. You can always bring in a water sample. How do I treat “Green Water”? Algaefix. Make sure your tank is not in direct sunlight and your lights are being turned off at night. How do I treat brown algae? This can be another “cycle” your tank is going though. Whether it be a new tank, 3-4 weeks old, going though its first algae bloom or new light bulbs were added causing a bloom. For freshwater algae eating fish are your best bet. For saltwater snails and/or hermit crabs are the best bet. Make sure your tank is not in direct sunlight and your lights are being turned off at night. |
